Anniversary gifts for a partner

Two champagne coupes beside a small wrapped gift and dried flowers

Some links on this page go to Amazon. If you buy through one we earn a small commission, at no extra cost to you. It never changes what we recommend or the order we put things in. Photographs here are illustrations of the kind of thing described, not pictures of a particular product.

Something to use

The better version of an object they touch every day and would never replace on their own.

A neatly folded ivory waffle-weave cotton bathrobe

A properly good bathrobe

The gift people are most embarrassed to want and most pleased to get. Heavy cotton waffle or terry, in a size up from what they would pick. The cheap one they already own is the argument for it.

A matte black cast iron dutch oven with its lid on

A cast iron pan that will outlive you both

Only if they cook. Pre-seasoned, ten or twelve inches, from a maker who has been doing it a century. It is a gift with a fifty-year horizon, which suits the occasion.

A slim tan leather wallet beside a folded pocket square

A leather bag or wallet that will patina

Full-grain, unfinished, from a small maker. The point is that it looks worse in the shop and better in five years, which is a reasonable thing to say about a marriage.

A tan leather watch strap coiled beside a plain watch face

A watch strap, or the watch serviced

Either makes the thing already on their wrist feel new for a fraction of the price of a replacement. Check the lug width before ordering a strap.

A plain glass perfume bottle with a gold cap beside a silk ribbon

Perfume or aftershave they already wear

The bottle in the bathroom, in the size they never buy. Photograph the label rather than guessing, because this is not the category to be adventurous in.

For the two of you at home

The evenings you actually spend, made slightly better.

A large wool throw folded in thick layers

A heavy throw for the sofa

Big enough for two people, which is the whole specification. The one you own is almost certainly too small.

A folded wooden game board with player markers and a bag of tiles

A board game or a puzzle for two

Something that fills an evening without a screen. Check the player count: most games sag at two and a few are designed for it.

A folded linen duvet cover with a matching pillowcase

Better bedding

Percale or linen, a grade above what is on the bed. It is used every night by both of you, which is the best value in this entire list.

Things kept, rather than used up

Objects that will still be in the house in ten years.

A wide matte cream stoneware serving bowl

A heavy stoneware serving bowl

The dish that comes to the table for everything from salad to pasta, and the one thing most kitchens are short of. Heavy enough that it does not slide when it is full.

Something to do

Bookings beat objects more often than gift guides admit. These are the ones people report back on.

  1. A night somewhere within two hours of home

Close enough that the travel is not the event. One night, somewhere with a good breakfast, booked and paid for with the date already agreed with whoever needs to mind the children.

  2. A cooking class in something neither of you can do

Pasta, dumplings, bread. It works because you are both beginners, which is a rarer thing to be together than it sounds.

  3. Tickets to the thing they mentioned once

The band, the play, the match they said they would like to see and then never mentioned again. That they mentioned it once is the whole gift, it means you were listening.

  4. A standing monthly evening, prepaid

Twelve of something small rather than one of something large. A supper club, a cinema membership, a bookable babysitter. The recurring gift outperforms the single expensive one nearly every time.

If you have left it late

Things that hold up on short notice without looking like they were chosen on short notice.

  1. A letter, written properly

Not a card with a line in it. A page about a specific thing that happened this year, on decent paper. It costs nothing and it is the item most likely to still be in a drawer in twenty years.

  2. A print of a photograph you both like

Framed, at a size that means it goes on a wall rather than in a box. Most photographs from the last decade have never been printed once, which is the reason this lands.

  3. The good version of something consumable

Olive oil, whisky, tea, chocolate from a maker rather than a brand. Low risk, no storage burden, and it does not pretend to be more than it is.

  4. A case of something you both drink

Split across the year rather than drunk in a month. It turns one gift into twelve small ones.

Anniversary year lookup

Which anniversary it is, the traditional and modern materials, the flower and the stone, for any year.

Save the anniversary

We'll remind you about a month before it comes around, every year, with enough time to order the slow kind of gift.

Just the month and day. No year needed.

One or two emails a year about this date. Unsubscribe anytime.

How to choose

The trouble with anniversary gifts is that the occasion repeats. Whatever you choose has to sit alongside everything you have already given, and by year six or seven the obvious ideas are used up. That is the real problem to solve, and it is why this list is organized by what a gift is for rather than by price.

There are three kinds that work. Something to keep, which marks the specific date and stays on a wall or a shelf. Something to use, which is the better version of an everyday object they would never buy themselves. And something to do, which is the one most couples underrate, a booked evening beats an object more often than people expect.

If you are working to a year material, the traditional and modern lists are worth a look before you decide; they are narrower than they sound and they make a good constraint. The lookup at the bottom of this page will tell you which year is which.

Questions

Good to know

How much should an anniversary gift cost?

There is no correct number, and the pattern we see is that the gifts people remember are specific rather than expensive. The one rule worth keeping is to agree a rough figure with your partner beforehand, because a large gap in either direction is what actually causes the awkwardness.

Do I have to follow the traditional year materials?

No. They are a convention, not a rule, and published lists disagree with each other on plenty of years. They are useful mainly as a constraint, a narrow prompt is easier to work with than an open field.

What if we have agreed not to do gifts?

Then do not give an object. A booked evening or a written letter usually sits outside the agreement in spirit, and if you are unsure, the letter is the safe one.

How far ahead do I need to order something personalized?

About a month is comfortable for anything made to order, and more in November and December. The countdown tool on this site will work out the last comfortable order date for you from the date itself.
