25th anniversary gifts

A silver photo frame beside a folded ribbon and two glasses

Things for the house they share

Objects used weekly for the next twenty-five years.

A stack of folded linen napkins in soft white

A set of linen napkins for the table

Cloth napkins turn an ordinary dinner into a laid table, and most couples are still using the ones that arrived at the wedding. Six in a plain weave wash for years and get better with every wash.

If you are one of the couple

Gifts that work between the two people rather than in front of an audience.

  1. A trip booked in full, dates agreed

At twenty-five years the constraint is rarely money and almost always time. Booking it, paying for it, and clearing the calendar is three gifts in one.

  2. Their wedding photographs, properly printed

Most couples married in the era where the album exists but nothing has been reprinted since. A handful printed well and framed will get more attention than anything new.

  3. A piece of jewelry remade rather than replaced

A jeweler can reset an existing stone into something they will actually wear. It costs less than a new piece and it means considerably more.

If you are buying for the couple

The harder case: something for two people with a full house and settled taste.

  1. A very good bottle from the wedding year

Port, whisky, or wine from the actual year. It is specific, it has an obvious occasion attached, and it does not need shelf space forever.

  2. Dinner somewhere they would not book themselves

Paid in advance rather than given as a voucher, because a voucher becomes an errand. Tell them the reservation is made and let them choose the night.

  3. A commissioned drawing of the house

Their house, or the first one they lived in together if you can find a photograph. Small illustrators do these well and it is the rare gift that is genuinely one-off.

  4. A proper garden thing, if they have a garden

A tree with a long life, a good bench, or a specimen plant. It marks the date in a way that keeps changing, which most anniversary objects do not.

  5. The album nobody made

Twenty-five years of photographs collected from the wider family and printed as one book. It takes weeks rather than minutes, and it is usually the gift that gets cried over.

Smaller things that still land

For when you are one of several people giving something.

  1. A silver-plated pen or bookmark that gets used

The traditional material in an object with an actual daily job. Modest, correct, and it does not compete with the main gift.

  2. A letter from each of their children

Collected, printed, and put in one envelope. It is free, it takes coordination rather than money, and it outperforms nearly everything above.

  3. A good bottle of olive oil or honey from where they married

Specific to the place rather than the number. It gets used up, which is a virtue in a house that already has enough objects.

Things for the house they share, continued

  1. A good lamp for the room they sit in

Warm light in the right corner does more for a room than furniture.

  2. A wall clock with a plain face

Kitchens tend to keep whichever clock arrived first. A quiet one that is actually nice to look at gets seen a hundred times a day and is never bought for oneself.

  3. A weekend bag for the trips they take now

Twenty-five years in, the trips are more frequent and the luggage is older.

  4. Two good dressing gowns

A pair, rather than one. It suits the anniversary and it is worn daily.

  5. A wall clock or a barometer for the hall

An object that stays in one place for another twenty-five years.

How to choose

Twenty-five years is the first anniversary that most people mark publicly, which changes what a gift has to do. It is often bought by adult children, by siblings, or by friends rather than by the couple themselves, and it usually has to survive being opened in front of other people.

The traditional material is silver and the modern list agrees, which is unusually convenient. But silver is a starting point rather than an instruction, a silver-framed print does the job better than a silver object nobody has a use for.

Two things to avoid. Anything that reads as an ornament with a number on it, which tends to go into a cupboard within the year. And anything that requires the couple to do maintenance on it, which at this stage is a gift to their to-do list rather than to them.

Questions

Good to know

What is the 25th anniversary material?

Silver, on both the traditional and the modern lists, one of the few years where the two agree. The associated flower is the iris.

Is it normal for children to organize the gift?

Yes, and at this milestone it is more common than not. If several people are contributing, one larger gift usually lands better than five separate ones, and someone should be nominated to coordinate.

Do we give a card as well?

If the gift is being opened in company, yes, the card is what carries the words, and a gift given without them tends to feel transactional in a room full of people.

How long before the date should I order?

For anything personalized or made to order, about a month. The countdown tool on this site takes the date and gives you the last comfortable order day for each kind of gift.
