50th anniversary gifts

Comfort, and things kept close

At fifty years the useful gifts are about ease and memory.

A heated throw blanket

A heated throw

Warmth without heating the whole house, which most people this age are careful about.

A slim floor reading lamp with a brass stem and a linen shade

A very good reading lamp

Eyes change. Bright, adjustable light beside the chair is the most useful object on this page.

Gifts that add to the day rather than the house

The category that reliably works at this milestone.

  1. A photographer for two hours at the gathering

Almost nobody thinks of this and everybody wants the pictures afterwards. Two hours is enough, and the results are the thing the family keeps.

  2. Lunch for the whole family, paid in advance

The couple usually tries to pay. Settling the bill before the day removes the one argument that reliably happens at these gatherings.

  3. A car and driver for the day

Unglamorous and enormously appreciated, particularly if either of them has stopped driving at night. It turns a logistical worry into a non-issue.

Gifts that document fifty years

These take weeks rather than an afternoon, and they are the ones that get kept.

  1. A book of letters from everyone who knows them

One page each from children, grandchildren, and old friends, collected quietly over a couple of months and printed as a single book. It is the most work on this page and the most reliable result.

  2. Their wedding photographs restored

Fifty-year-old prints fade and crack. A restorer can repair and reprint them for less than most people assume, and the difference when they see it is considerable.

  3. A recorded interview with the two of them

An hour of them telling the story of how they met, recorded properly. Grandchildren will have it long after the objects have been dispersed.

  4. A map of everywhere they have lived

Drawn or printed as one piece, with the dates. It is a portrait of a life rather than of a couple, which suits people who dislike being the subject of things.

Smaller gifts that do not add clutter

For guests and for anyone giving alongside a main gift.

  1. A gold-year bottle: something from 1976 or thereabouts

Whisky or port from the wedding year. Consumable, specific, and it does not need to be displayed.

  2. A subscription to something they read

A paper delivered, a magazine, a library of large-print or audio books. It arrives all year and takes up no permanent room.

  3. A gardener or a window cleaner for a year

Practical help given as a gift rather than as a suggestion that they need help, the framing matters, and done right this is the most useful thing on the page.

  4. Flowers arranged in something reusable

In a jug or a bowl rather than cellophane, so there is nothing to clear up. Iris for twenty-five, yellow roses or violets for fifty, if you want to follow the flower list.

Comfort, and things kept close, continued

  1. A photo album for the whole fifty years

Printed, ordered and labeled. It gets looked at far more than a screen.

  2. A soft lambswool blanket

Light, warm and easy to carry from room to room.

  3. A thick door mat and a hall bench

Small changes that make coming in and out easier.

  4. A good kettle that is easy to lift

Full kettles get heavy. A lighter one with a clear gauge is used ten times a day.

  5. Two good armchair cushions

Support where they actually sit, one each.

How to choose

At fifty years the practical problem is almost always the same: the couple has everything, wants very little, and would rather not be given something else to find room for. Gifts that add to the house tend to land badly. Gifts that add to the day tend to land well.

The material is gold on both lists. As with silver at twenty-five, treat it as a prompt rather than an instruction, gold-colored objects bought for the sake of the color are the most reliably disappointing gift at this milestone.

The other thing worth knowing is that this anniversary is frequently organized rather than simply given. If there is a lunch or a gathering, the gift that works is often the one that documents it or that everyone contributes to, rather than the one you hand over privately.

Questions

Good to know

What is the 50th anniversary material?

Gold, on both the traditional and modern lists. The flower usually given is the yellow rose, and sometimes the violet.

What if they say they do not want anything?

Take them at their word about objects and ignore them about time. Paying for the lunch, arranging the transport, or booking a photographer are all things people decline in advance and appreciate on the day.

Is a card enough if I am a distant relative?

Yes, particularly a card with something specific in it, a memory of the wedding, or of them, rather than a printed verse. At fifty years the written recollections are the part that gets read twice.

How early should the family start on a book of letters?

Two months is realistic. The writing takes people longer than they expect and the printing takes a week or two, so working back from the date is worth doing early. The countdown tool will do that arithmetic for you.
