The thing to know about teacher gifts is the volume. A teacher receives the same gift many times over, from many households, in the same week. Mugs, candles and hand cream arrive by the box. Nothing is wrong with any of them individually; the problem is arithmetic.
In the United States, Teacher Appreciation Day falls on the Tuesday of the first full week of May, and the week around it is when most of this arrives at once.
What people actually give
Two things break the pattern. Something the teacher chooses themselves, which is why a gift card is a better gift here than almost anywhere else. And a specific written note from the child about something that actually happened in the classroom, which costs nothing, is kept for years, and is the thing teachers say they remember.
